Why it's there: Gold Shield Whiskey
Thursday, July 24, 2008 Get ready to get very subtle this week because if you blinked, you probably missed this week's hidden secret. In fact, I bet even if you looked right at it most guests wouldn't pick up on the reason why this week's entry is here. In the Great Movie Ride's "Underworld" scene, you enter an ambush between a few gangsters and the police trying to get them. In front of the gangsters are a number of crates that have the "Gold Shield Whiskey" logo on the front of the crates.
These are the crates of whiskey that James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart stole from a government warehouse in the classic film from 1939, "The Roaring Twenties ." In the film, after the World War I Armistice, Lloyd Hart goes back to practice law, former saloon keeper George Hally turns to bootlegging, and out-of-work Eddie Bartlett becomes a cab driver. Eddie builds a fleet of cabs through delivery of bootleg liquor and hires Lloyd as his lawyer. George becomes Eddie's partner and the rackets flourish until love and rivalry interfere.
The only photo proof of this fact is from an itty-bitty screen capture so excuse the quality but you get the idea.
