Why it's there: Splash Fountain
Thursday, May 01, 2008 Disney's Hollywood Studios is, among other things, about celebrating monumental films in the history of Hollywood. The Great Movie Ride pays hommage to such classics as Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, Indiana Jones and more while all around the park we see homages to Hollywood stars and early pinnacles of modern film history. Tucked away near the Backlot Tour is an hommage to a film many guests didn't likely see and more unusual is the fact the film has no historical signifigance to Hollywood history and isn't even a major film for the stars of the film. So why is this fountain that pays hommage to the film Splash, in Disney's Hollywood Studios?
The fountain itself was made inside the Studios in the Walt Disney Studios Scenic Shop. The molds used to produce the mermaid and dolphins were originally created for ice sculptures seen in the Disney movie "Herbie Goes Bananas". This mermaid fountain was Darryl Hannah's character's gift to Tom Hanks' character in the movie "Splash". The sequel to the film, Splash Too, was completely filmed at the then-new Disney-MGM Studios. The fountain is of importance to the early history of the Studios and remains an hommage not so much to a great film, but rather to the Studios for producing its first film. |
