Every week I’ll be answering any question about the Disney-MGM Studios from planning questions to “what happened to...” questions. So if you’ve got something you’ve been wondering about or simply need clarification, please feel free to email them to me (use the form below).
One follow up question - what route does the Star Wars parade take? Is it the same as the afternoon parade? Again, Thanks! - Steve, GA
If there's someone who takes advantage of the Ask Matt column, it's Steve, but in all honesty I love answering these questions so kudos to you Steve for being able to pick my brain. As for your question, the Star Wars Parade follows the same route as the afternoon parade (Enters near Star Tours, goes past Echo Lake, turns at the Hat and goes down Hollywood Boulevard and exits by Crossroads of the World.
If you're looking for a great spot to view the parade, there are these half walls in front of the celebrity heads to the right of Sounds Dangerous. You can sit on the walls and no one can get infront of you. You can arrive 1/2 hour before the parade and there is usually one available.
I noticed that they have now added a "Build your own lightsaber" section to Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney. This seems appropriate for stores in MGM also. Do you know if they will have this option after Star Tours also?
In a semi-related question, do you think Star Tours is appropriate for a 5 y.o.? - Castlegazer
Currently, the Build your own light saber is only available at Downtown Disney, although I agree with you it would make sense for it to be at the Star Tours attraction. The only good reason I can think of why it isn't there is because the Star Tours store is small enough as it is and I'm not sure you could squeeze in something like the Build Your Own Lightsaber without compromising the space there.
Star Tours is a fun attraction and can be fine for a 5 year old. Here's the thing, one 5 year old could probably handle Tower of Terror while another one might be scared of Cinderella's Carousel. A smart idea might be to first ride Star Tours with a "test flight". A test flight is where you ride Star Tours but the simulator doesn't move; you simply watch the film inside the simulator without the movements. To get a test flight, ask the Cast Member for a test flight when you get the point in the line where they ask how many are in your party. If your 5 year old can handle that and wants more, then try the real ride. At the very least, the test flight will show him/her what the attraction is like so there's less of a surprise when the simulator starts moving in the real ride.
Hi Matt, I've heard that they sometimes have a dance party at Playhouse Disney in the evenings. Do you know anything about this? Thanks! - Bob
On nights where the Disney-MGM Studios stay open late for evening Extra Magic Hours, there is usually an Extra Magic Hours Dance Party at the Studios where kids can go into the Playhouse Disney building and dance and hang out with select characters. The characters that show up are Jojo & Goliath, Goofy Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and Olie & Zoe (of Rolie Polie Olie) and there are about 4 characters out at any given time. There is also usuallu a ballon guy who makes balloon animals for the kids. It's a fun alternative for the kids and great if you have teenagers and preschoolers in your group as the teens can go ride the more adult attractions while the little ones enjoy hanging out with the characters. And the event runs throughout the Evening Extra Magic Hours so you can come and go as you please.
